March 21, 2022Hurricane season sneaks up quickly each year. While there is no certainty around whether we’ll see a storm, it’s better to be safe than sorry! Here, we’ve put together a handy guide to getting your home ready for the 2022 hurricane season.
Have Emergency Supplies Ready
You don’t want to wait until shelves are empty and stores are closed to make sure you have everything you need to weather a storm. We provided a quick list of items below, but please refer to an in-depth hurricane guide for a comprehensive list. A great resource for this is the Hurricane Guide from Wink News.
- One gallon of water per person, per day (plus additional water for food preparation & sanitation)
- Prescription drugs and a first aid kit
- NOAA weather radio
It’s also important to make sure your whole house generator has been serviced in the last year, so you can be sure it’s in proper working order for hurricane season! If you don’t own a whole home generator, make sure you have plenty of extras of the following items. (Even if you do have a whole house generator, it certainly won’t hurt to still have these items on hand!)
- Candles
- Matches
- Extra batteries
- Flashlights
- Non-perishable food
Protect Your Home
Look around your yard and home and see if there is anything that could easily become a dangerous projectile during a hurricane or storm. You’ll also want to make sure all your windows and doors are hurricane proof, made of tempered glass, or have storm shutters installed over them before the storm hits.
